How to Report a Scam in Ireland

If you've lost money, call your bank first, then report to An Garda Síochána. For scam texts, calls, emails and websites where nothing was lost, the steps below show who to tell and what to keep. The advice follows guidance from the CCPC, ComReg and Citizens Information.

1. If money left your account: your bank, right now

Call your bank or card provider using the number on your card or in its official app. Ask them to block the card and dispute the payment. If you paid by card, the CCPC notes you may be able to request a chargeback. Bank transfers are much harder to recover, so speed matters.

2. Report it to An Garda Síochána

Gardaí handle scams as crimes. Report at your local Garda station or through garda.ie. Serious or complex fraud can be passed to the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau. If money is moving right now or you feel unsafe, call 112 or 999.

How to report each type of scam

Every report starts the same way: stop contact, don't pay anything more, and save the evidence.

  • Scam text: screenshot it, delete it and block the sender. Report it to Gardaí if you clicked or paid. See ComReg's scam calls and texts advice.
  • Scam phone call: hang up. Call the organisation back on a number you find yourself, not one the caller gave you.
  • Scam email: don't click links or open attachments. Forward it to the real company's fraud or phishing address, then delete it.
  • Scam website: don't enter details. If you bought something, contact your bank and report the site to Gardaí.
  • Scam on a marketplace or social app: report the profile or listing in the app, and to Gardaí if you lost money.

Evidence to keep

Gather everything before you delete messages or block accounts.

  • Screenshots of messages, profiles and listings
  • Phone numbers, email addresses and usernames
  • Payment receipts, bank references and dates
  • Website addresses, copied from the address bar
