Thousands of child-safety lawsuits are reshaping social media
More than 3,000 pending actions against the largest social platforms are forcing a rethink of how feeds, ads and identity work. Here is what the dockets show and what a safer design looks like.

The largest social platforms are facing an unprecedented volume of litigation over child-safety harms. Public federal dockets in the United States list thousands of pending actions consolidated against Meta, Google (YouTube), TikTok and Snap, and the count has climbed almost every week.
TL;DR
- Public U.S. federal dockets show thousands of pending child-safety actions against the biggest social platforms.
- The core allegations concern engagement-optimised feeds, weak age assurance and unverified advertisers.
- Regulators in the EU, UK and Ireland are moving in the same direction with age-assurance and design-code rules.
- Safegram was designed around the opposite defaults: verified identity, no advertising auction and a family safety layer.
- You do not have to take our word for it. Every figure below links to a primary source you can check yourself.
What the dockets actually say
The cases are not a single lawsuit. They are large groups of individual claims, filed by families and by school districts and state attorneys general, that were consolidated so they could be managed together. The common thread in the complaints is design: recommendation systems tuned for time-on-app, notification patterns that pull minors back at night, and reporting flows that were slow or ineffective.
Because these are public dockets, the totals are verifiable. Safegram publishes a live counter on our homepage that refreshes every 24 hours from the official pending-case listings, and we link the source next to the number. We would rather you check it than trust us.
Why identity keeps appearing in the filings
A recurring theme is that anyone can be anyone. When accounts are free, unlimited and unverified, the cost of harassment, grooming and scam selling drops close to zero. Age self-declaration compounds it: a birth-year dropdown is not age assurance.
This is also where advertising enters. Reporting in 2024 estimated that a very large share of one platform's revenue came from ads for scams and prohibited goods. When ad inventory is auctioned to whoever pays, the platform's incentive to check who is paying is weak.
The design Safegram chose instead
Safegram is built by a small team in Dublin, and the product decisions follow from the failures above.
Verified identity, free for everyone. Identity checks are run by our partner Didit, an independent verification provider used by regulated companies across Europe. Verification is free and encouraged for every member, and it is required for anyone who wants to sell, trade or offer services. Safegram never stores your ID document or biometric data โ Didit performs the check and returns only a pass or fail.
No advertising auction. We do not sell ad inventory. The only businesses that can promote anything on Safegram are verified organisations with a trust score built from real, completed activity. There is nothing for a scam advertiser to buy.
A family safety layer. Parents and guardians can set up supervised accounts with age-appropriate defaults, contact controls and visibility limits, without reading the messages of a teenager who is entitled to some privacy.
No data resale. We do not sell or broker personal data, and there is no behavioural ad profile to monetise, because there are no behavioural ads.
What to watch next
Three things will decide whether the industry actually changes: whether courts accept design-based liability, whether age assurance becomes a legal requirement rather than a checkbox, and whether advertiser verification becomes standard. Safegram already operates as if the answer to all three is yes.
