Verified-only advertising: how Safegram shuts the door on scam ads

Ad auctions reward whoever pays, not whoever is real. Safegram replaced the auction with an identity and trust-score gate that scam advertisers cannot pass.

Scam advertising is not a moderation failure. It is a business-model outcome. When ad space is auctioned in milliseconds to the highest bidder, checking who the bidder is slows the auction down and reduces revenue. Safegram removed the auction.

TL;DR

  • Reporting in 2024 estimated that a very large share of one major platform's revenue came from scam and prohibited-goods advertising.
  • Real-time bidding makes advertiser verification a cost centre, so it stays minimal.
  • Safegram sells no ad inventory at all. Only verified businesses with a trust score can promote anything.
  • Verification is performed by Didit; Safegram stores no ID documents or biometrics.

Why auctions attract fraud

An ad auction is optimised for one thing: fill every impression at the best price. A fraudulent advertiser is, from the auction's point of view, an excellent customer. They bid aggressively, they spend fast, and they rarely complain. Detection happens after the money has moved, which is why takedown numbers are always large and always late.

The Safegram advertiser gate

There is no inventory to buy. A business that wants visibility on Safegram passes through a gate with three stages.

Stage one โ€” identity. The organisation and the person behind it are verified through Didit, our independent verification partner. This is a real document and liveness check, not an email confirmation. Safegram receives a pass or fail; the documents never touch our systems.

Stage two โ€” trust score. A score from 0 to 100 is built from verified identity, completed transactions, dispute history, response behaviour and account age. It cannot be bought and it decays if behaviour changes.

Stage three โ€” approval. Only businesses above the threshold can promote offers, list services or appear in commercial surfaces. Falling below the threshold removes that access automatically.

What this costs us, honestly

It costs reach. A verified-only marketplace grows slower than an open one, because friction filters out volume as well as fraud. We think that trade is the entire product. People do not need another feed. They need one place where the person on the other side of a trade, a plan or a message is a real, accountable human.

For businesses and creators

Verification is free. Once verified, a business gets a visible badge, access to commercial features, and a trust score that compounds with good behaviour. Creators are treated the same way: verified creators can offer services and sell, and buyers can see exactly why they should be trusted.

What we do not do

We do not sell or broker personal data. We do not build behavioural advertising profiles. We do not allow anonymous commercial accounts. And we do not run a bidding system that would make any of those things profitable.
